What is a Face Serum?

Let's be honest here, sometimes we buy a new skincare product because it sounds like the magical solution which might just heal all or at least some of our skin imbalances.

In the past years there’s been a big hype around face serums, but why is that? What actually is a face serum? Should I be using it on my skin? These are some of the questions you might be asking yourself as you see so many skincare brands marketing their face serums.

So let’s talk about the whats, the whys, the whens, and hows on face serum...

What is a face serum?

Traditionally serums are water-based and formulated with a high concentration of active ingredients, while leaving out the heavier, barrier-creating ingredients found in your daily moisturizers. By leaving out these heavier ingredients, you have a lightweight moisturizer with smaller molecules that have the ability to penetrate deeper into the cellular level of the skin. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns like skin hydration, tightening and improving skin texture.

Can a serum be used as a moisturizer?

The texture of a serum is usually lighter than a moisturizer which means that if you tend to be in the normal to dry to combination skin range, you will most likely want to apply a moisturizer on top of your serum. On the other hand, for oilier skin, a serum could work as a standalone product.

When and how should I use my serum?

Serums are traditionally applied underneath your moisturizer. They have a high concentration of active ingredients and a few drops will usually be enough to cover your entire face, and a few more for your neck and decollete. A serum can be applied morning and night but it may not be necessary, listen to your skin, it will surely tell you what it needs. Keep in mind, as the current face oil trend grows, we are seeing more face oils marketed as serums and this can be confusing. The "face oil" serums may need to be applied in a different order, with or sometimes on top of your moisturizer. For best results, simply read the instructions on the label and apply accordingly.

If your serum is applied properly, a bottle should last you twice as long as your moisturizer. If you’d like to stretch the usage of your serum, simply add a few drops with your moisturizer as a skin booster either in the morning or at night.
