Why Goat Milk? What It Actually Does in a Bar of Soap
Goat milk has been part of traditional skincare for generations, but for us, it isn't an ingredient we use simply because it sounds wholesome or luxurious.
We use goat milk because of what it brings to the soap itself.
At Cascadia, goat milk has been part of our soapmaking tradition since 1990. Today, the milk we use comes from a local goat farm in Agassiz, British Columbia, keeping one of the ingredients at the heart of our soaps close to home.

Over the years, skincare trends have come and gone, but we've continued making goat milk soap for a simple reason: it creates the kind of cleansing experience we want—a rich, creamy lather that leaves skin feeling clean, soft and comfortable.
1. Natural fats create a richer, creamier bar
One of the biggest differences between goat milk soap and a conventional cleansing bar is something you can actually feel.
Goat milk naturally contains fats that contribute to the soap's creamy texture and lather. Combined with our plant oils and shea butter, it helps create a bar that feels nourishing rather than harsh.
This is especially appreciated by people whose skin tends to feel dry or tight after washing.
Cleansing is necessary—but we don't think your skin should feel stripped afterward.
2. Goat milk naturally contains lactic acid
Goat milk also contains naturally occurring lactic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA).
In skincare, lactic acid is known for its gentle exfoliating properties. In a rinse-off product like soap, we don't treat it like a concentrated exfoliating treatment, but it is another reason goat milk has long been valued in traditional skincare.
The goal isn't aggressive exfoliation. It's simply a gentle, comfortable cleanse that works well as part of an everyday routine.
3. It's about more than a list of vitamins
You'll often see goat milk skincare promoted for its long list of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals.
And while goat milk certainly contains nutrients, we think there's a more useful way to judge a bar of soap:
How does your skin feel after you use it?
For us, that's the real test.
Does it lather well?
Does it cleanse effectively?
Does your skin feel comfortable afterward?
Do you actually look forward to using it every day?
Those questions matter more to us than turning an ingredient list into a collection of complicated skincare claims.
4. Goat milk is only part of the formula
A good goat milk soap isn't simply ordinary soap with a splash of milk added.
The entire formulation matters.
Our signature goat milk soaps are made with a thoughtfully balanced blend of olive oil, coconut oil, sustainable palm oil, goat milk and shea butter. Each ingredient contributes something different to the finished bar—from cleansing and lather to hardness, creaminess and skin feel.
Traditional soapmaking also naturally creates glycerin during the saponification process, helping give handmade soap its characteristic feel.
It's the combination of these ingredients—not one miracle ingredient—that makes the finished bar special.
5. Why we've kept making goat milk soap since 1990
When Cascadia first began making soap in Vancouver in 1990, goat milk became one of the ingredients that helped define our approach to skincare: simple, thoughtful formulas designed to care for the skin rather than overwhelm it.
More than three decades later, we still use it.
Not because goat milk is trendy.
Not because we need another ingredient to put on the front of a label.
But because it continues to help us make a genuinely beautiful bar of soap.
Rich. Creamy. Long-lasting. And comfortable enough to reach for every day.
Sometimes, an old-fashioned ingredient sticks around simply because it works beautifully.
